Situated near the Senanayake Samudraya, which is the largest reservoir in Sri Lanka, the Gal Oya National Park was recognized in the year 1954. Overlooked by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, the park is located about 314 km away from the commercial capital of Colombo while it is well notable for the herds of elephants that can be seen roaming around all year long. Covering an area of about 25000 hectares, the closest city to the Gal Oya National Park is Ampara which is towards the East coast of Sri Lanka. The area is also known among Buddhists for the “Dighavapi Stupa” while the biodiversity in the area attracts many tourists making it a beautiful location for nature lovers to enjoy a day out. The vegetation of the Gal Oya National Park consists of forests, savannah and mountainous grassland and shrub.
