The road to Mahiyangana, 194 km from the capital city of Colombo bypassing the historical city of Kandy is widely referred to as "The road that needs both hands on the wheel all the time", Known in the native language as the Daha Ata Vanguwa due to its 18 arduous hairpin bends. In the year 2011, the winding, descending road from Kandy was widened, re-laid and made safer with the number of hairpin bends reduced from 18 to 16.
